Duel Masters SotC deck - Fire/Dark Necrodragons

"The Dragons rose. Hopes fell."

There are three Necrodragon creatures in Duel Masters: Shadow of the Code: Necrodragon Giland, Necrodragon Galbazeek, and Super Necrodragon Abzo Dolba. (I think the TCG got one more after the release of the game)

Galbazeek and especially Giland offer high power for their mana costs. The tradeoff is that they shift the mana cost elsewhere. Giland offers double breaking for four mana, with the downside being that it's destroyed after battling a creature. Still, it can usually swing for two shields and take out a creature on the way out. Galbazeek is a cost 6 double breaker with 9000 power. It might not be worth it unless you want to lean into the undead dragons. They look SICK, so I'm gonna.

Mixing in a fire deck offers a lot of evolution material to bring out Super Necrodragon Abzo Dolba. It also mixes well with the aggressive low cost game Necrodragons want to play.

I'll finish this article later with a proper tested decklist.

You should be afraid of these ghosts.

I built this for my playthrough of Shadows of the Code in 2015.

It's really satisfying if you can get more than one Gray Balloon on the field. It boosts every Darkness creature on the field by 2,000 power. Of course, that applies to your opponent, too, buuuuut if they're focused on any other civilization it makes your blockers terrifying.

well I tried this card as the core of a deck and I wasn't vibing with it. but it's got the potential to be fun.

Duel Masters - Light/Water Hydro Hurricane

Here to rob you like a hurricane.

I haven't built this yet but it sounds fun. Basically, you fill the field with as many light creatures as you can while building up mana. Then, as soon as you can, you cast Hydro Hurricane to try and shut down your opponent.

If you're lucky, you might be able to drop them below three mana while you get to play with six.

I go by Ruki online. The name is a shortened version of the Bomberman character Rukifellth's.

I speedrun video games from the early 2000s, but maybe not the ones you'd expect. Instead, I go for GBA racing games and Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2.

If a game lets me play as the boss character, I'm probably gonna do it. Bonus points if they're one of those horrible projectile spammers. And if I can't play as a boss, I'm gonna pick someone edgy or annoying.

2024/01/17 - JavaScript Navigation

It took a while, but now all the pages can load the main content without loading the header and background again. This should make the site feel more zippy.

2023/12/30 - The Web Fonts Are Back

I learned how to make the web fonts swap in after everything else is loaded, so I brought them back. The body text felt kinda hard to read with all the common fonts I tried. Now I can have those nice condensed headers, too.

Merry Christmas! Now you can see some of my OCs. I hope the names are edgy enough.

2023/12/04 - The Zoop Update

I've done some work to make this site lighter. Now two of the four pages in their entirety are smaller than the original background image GIF.

This included changing the way the background image works. Now it's just a PNG. I also removed the web fonts and switched everything to Arial Black and Verdana.

I also removed all the embedded YouTube videos.

2023/11/29 - The Navbar Update

I combined some pages to make the navigation bar smaller. This should make it nicer on mobile phones.

To keep the pages easy to navigate, I added tables of contents to every page.

BlazBlue Centralfiction

Finally, a BlazBlue with Izanami. They announced her on my birthday, even.

Ultrakill (PC)

A fantastic arena FPS with an equally good soundtrack. It lets you zoop around just as much as you can in Quake 3, and then some. And the soundtrack's just as good, too.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (PS2)

It's been over 20 years and I still don't think HP2 PS2's hot pursuit mode has been beat. The other three releases aren't as good.

I guess it's kinda interesting that in 2002 a game could have two entirely different versions.

Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2

I've played a lot of BMX games, and this one does almost everything well. The only thing it's missing is landing sloppily. Maybe the controls are a little too easy and reliable compared to THPS, but it's a lot closer to where I'd want them to be.

PS2 version has two fewer levels. Xbox version plays multiple songs per run instead of looping them.

I'm good at this one too.

Under Night In-Birth EXE:Late[cl-r]

Now this is a fighting game with D R I P.

It's the kind of game where you can have a character crisis not because of gameplay, but because Chaos and Byakuya just look that cool.

Great feeling execution/reward balance. You can do normal -> command normal -> special and it's usually fine.

Newest KOF to feature Bao.

He doesn't have the classic 2001 infinite, but he can dab while he's erasing your health bar.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

You know how sometimes you play a video game and the enemies are throwing fireballs and stuff, and you're thinking damn, I wish I could do that? Aria of Sorrow finally says "Sure, why not?"

Oh, and Soma's coat looks really cool.

VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action

But a word about my friend Gil, and what a genius he was because, when we were first up at the jukebox and we were punching in the Every Day Is Nights, alright? I'd punched in about seven, and then Gil says to me, "Hey, hey, hey wait. Before we drop in another Every Day Is Night. Let's put in one 'Drive Me Wild.'" And that is when the afternoon went from good to great. After seven "Every Day Is Night"s in a row, suddenly, "Da-na-na-na da-na-na-na," and the sigh of relief has swept through the diner; people were ecstatic. It was like the liberation of France. You know, for years, scientists have wondered, can you make grown men and women weep tears of joy by playing Garoad's "Drive Me Wild"? And the answer is yes, you can, as long as it is preceded by seven "Every Day Is Night"s.

And on the other hand, when we went back. Holy shit. "Drive Me Wild" fades out. It's dead quiet: "Dun-duh-dun-dada-dun dun dun." People went fucking insane. No one could handle it.

Bomberman 64

Bomberman at his puzzle platforming peak. The first level of Green Garden is as perfect as it gets.

Fun character designs, too, with what feels like a lot of tokusatsu influence.

Akifumi Tada isn't a big name in game soundtracks like Jun Chikuma or Yasinori Mitsuda, but he did a fantastic job here.

Bomberman, now with some very big names. Did you know Yoshi-P directed the story? Did you know Mitsuda worked on the soundtrack?

PROTIP: to play this game on an emulator without control stick issues, try ares or simple64.

Bare Knuckle III

The US release is called Streets of Rage III, but you shouldn't play that version. They made all the enemies have too much health. I guess it means more time to enjoy the soundtrack.

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Stadium

Did you know that in Gen 1

Psywave can desync a link battle?
Critical hit rates are determined by a Pokemon's base speed? And anything with more than 64 speed has a 255/256 chance to crit with moves like Slash?
Certain Pokemon have negative experience when caught at level 1 (which requires glitches)?

Quake III Arena

The railgun is perfect.

GoldenEye 007

It's all the jank of gen 1 Pokemon in a console multiplayer FPS. And there are a lot of cool-looking places in the levels, too.

The RC-P90 is almost as perfect as the Quake III railgun.

Burnout 2: Point of Impact

As good as Hot Pursuit 2, but instead of cops it has a very satisfying boost mechanic. I wish it had a hard mode but it's still pretty darn good, if a little too easy.

Age of Mythology

It's like Age of Empires, but you trade the satisfaction of bombard cannons and onagers for sick mythological creatures and god powers.

Beetle Adventure Racing

The grooviest game on the N64. It has a very enthusiastic announcer. Don't forget to check out the Australian version, HSV Adventure Racing!

Airforce Delta Strike

Do you like radio chatter? Do you like ridiculous superweapons? Have I got a game for you!

Doom 64

I don't think the Doom games are known for making you stop and admire the scenery, but this one pulls it off. It might not hit the highs of classic Doom, but it stays far above the lows.

Did you know that the composer for a lot of Gravity Games Bike's music worked on this too?

Garfield Kart: Furious Racing

Quite possibly the greatest game of a generation. The Citizen Kane of kart racers. Unsurpassed. Unmatched. Flawless. Makes Mario Kart look like M&M's Kart Racing in comparison. 6.2/10.

Left 4 Dead 2

You can bind fire to scroll up and scroll down. The pistols have a very high firecap. Fun combo.

Other Good Games

Need for Speed: Underground (GBA)

They managed to make this game fully 3D and still had room to fit Get Low and a couple other tracks in there. Sure, it's not the highest quality recording, but it's on a console where 32 MB was a big game.

Azure Striker Gunvolt

This could move up if I ever get around to finishing it. But I'm in the endgame and I love the enemy designs, so there's that.

honorable mentions

Garfield Kart

Inarguably one of the most innovative kart racers of the last decade. Survival and psychological horror elements. A true demonstration of genre-bending mastery. 4.2/10.

Gravity Games Bike: Street, Vert. Dirt

Yes, that's a comma and a period in the title. That's what it actually says on the copyright screen. Did you know the composer of Doom 64's soundtrack wrote a bunch of music for this?

This game actually beats Dave Mirra 2 in some areas!

CAPSTONE: THE PINNACLE OF GETTING LECTURED BY WILLIAM SHATNER

Tom and Jerry in: War of the Whiskers

This game lets you play as the boss characters. One of them has an attack that's fully invincible with by far the biggest hitbox in the game. He also gets a projectile that isn't throwing an item.

Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter

The main character's crouching jab combos into itself. It's an infinite in the corner. The charge's characters specials don't work on P2 side.

I don't play Yu-Gi-Oh anymore. But the card designs are cool enough that I still kinda keep up with the game. So I'll divide this into cards I've used and cards I think are neat.

Some of these belong to archetypes. I like the other members too but I'm focusing on individual favorites.

These are loosely ordered by how cool I think they are. Unless I wanted certain cards next to each other.

Apoqliphort Towers (2014)

Very cool asymmetrical design. An effect that makes it hard to get rid of. And it's super imposing. What's not to love?

Rainbows and grays make a good combo. Also, Apoqliphort is a dangerous sounding word.

Amorphactor Pain, the Imagination Dracoverlord (2016)

The absolute sickest, most metal thing I've seen on a trading card. Part man, part dragon, all edge.

They really found a good answer to the question "How can you possibly make an undead dragon cooler?"

Aluber the Jester of Despia (2021)

Wow! Cool jester!

I love his checkered patterns and mask.

Kashtira Shangri-Ira (2022)

Golden lion standing atop a glowing sphere. And if that's not already cool enough, it comes with a non-standard win condition.

Thunder Dragon Colossus (2018)

Big electric dragon. I remember when I saw Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon in a list of card codes in a cheat book. I thought it'd be awesome, so it was really disappointing when I saw the real thing. This is more like what I wanted.

Judgment Dragon (2008)

Classic boss monster. It can wipe the field for the low low cost of 1,000 life points.

Eldlich the Golden Lord (2020)

I like golden armor. And the glowing eyes.

The Seal of Orichalcos (2012, 2003 anime)

It's the subject of everyone's favorite filler arc! And it's cool and green!

Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys (2005)

Old-school control card from before I knew how to play beyond unga bunga Axe of Despair. Also, it's a cool golden bird. I think I asked for a few Flaming Eternity boosters because it kinda looks like Ra.

Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth (2003)

Awesome but impractical, except it's not that awesome. If you had enough control of the duel to bring this out, you had enough control to win without it.

Pumpking the King of Ghosts (2002)

I like ramp effects. I wish this had the crazy anime 10% per turn boost, but at least I can make a "And now, Castle of Dark Illusions will pump up Pumpking's attack!" pun up to four times in a row.

Harpie's Pet Dragon (2002)

Another ramp effect, kinda! I remember this being super scary in the anime. But I guess with anime Orichalcos it's a lot harder to get the Harpie Ladies off the field.

Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon (2004)

Those cowards at Konami won't give us Blue-Eyes Ultimate Shining Dragon because they know it could never match this one. There's no card that's ever been so mid while being so cool.

Five-Headed Dragon (2006)

A whole five thousand attack points! And cool elemental heads.

Five-Headed Link Dragon (2020)

A whole five thousand attack points! And cooler elemental heads.

Armityle the Chaos Phantasm (2009)

A whole ten thousand attack points, half the time!

Theinen the Great Sphinx (2004)

A whole thirty-five thousand attack points! Well, in the movie. It can hit 6,500 for one turn in the TCG :/

Yubel (2008)

It's time to stall with my dragon and chew bubblegum... and I'm all outta gum.

Probably the most usable of the many goofy boss monsters I've run. At least it's easy to get to the field.

Supreme King Z-ARC (2017)

UH-OH! You friccin moron. You just got Z-ARC'd!!!

Very, very cool dragon. It wipes the opponent's field. And it summons one of several other cool dragons when it wins a battle. And it's got protection. It really does feel like a final boss, and I love that.

Too bad it only has 4,000 attack points...

El Shaddoll Construct (2014)

Big evil boss monster. The Shaddolls are cool, and she's the leader of the bunch.

Axe of Despair (2002)

The pinnacle of UNGA. The easiest equip spell to harness.

United We Stand (2003)

The pinnacle of BUNGA. Requires slightly more thought than Axe of Despair, but it can get you even bigger boosts.

Mage Power (2003)

The pinnacle of UNGA BUNGA. Combine with either of the above spells for a nice boost of at least 1,800 attack points.

Yata-Garasu (2003)

This funny 200 attack point bird knows how to win duels and lose friends.

It probably wasn't as special in 2012, let alone now, but the way this let you put at least two cards on the field in one turn was very satisfying. And you can dump a card from your hand to revive it onto the field. It's like the old Foolish Burial/Monster Reborn combo except less generic and more legal.

Honest (2008)

Ironically, this thing has a dishonest effect.

Black Garden (2008)

Noticing a trend? I like to drag the pace of the game down.

Black Whirlwind (2009)

I remember when this was limited. Blackwings sure did help me in those DS games.

Every Earthbound Immortal (2009)

Aslla piscu and Ccapac Apu were my favorites because they seemed to play the best. Chacu Challhua had that fun burn effect, though. And Uru is an edgy spider. Wiraqocha Rasca is the coolest looking but plays the worst. Cusillu exists. Maybe it's more like "Every Earthbound Immortal except one."

Some Malefic Dragons (2010)

Self-explanatory at this point. I mainly used the ones that remove a monster from the extra deck, plus Blue-Eyes. Malefic Rainbow Dragon looks cool but I'm not gonna run a card that wants me using Crystal Beasts. And Malefic Red-Eyes is a bit short on attack.

Meklord Astro Mekanikle (2011)

Wow! Cool robot!

Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon

More attack than Z-ARC.

I think it's happened twice that a friend has played a Photon deck against me and I've thought "I should do that." Then it didn't last for very long.

Number 107: Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon (2013)

This futuristic dragon comes with a bunch of glowing red lines and can attack several times in a row.

Starving Venom Fusion Dragon (2016)

It's a big dangerous dragon. Also, it's purple and has cool orby bits.

Geomathmech Final Sigma (2019)

Quite possibly the newest card I've played. White and red mecha. Hits like a truck, especially with help from Mathmech Multiplication.

A psychic type gym leader with a Wobbuffet

He has a cool hat!

Noah can be very perceptive, and his gym battles are designed to remind trainers that brute force isn't always the answer. He has a tricky fighting style relying on predictions and controlling the pace of battle.

Likes: Making the right prediction, long battles, rainy days

Dislikes: Hot weather

Favorite food: Ice cream

Pokemon

Noah's favorite Pokemon, much to Makia's chagrin, is a clumsy Wobbuffet. Being the Psychic-type leader from Citrine Town, he also has a number of other Psychic-type Pokemon freely wandering around his house. Having enough space for that is a perk of being a gym leader, he says.

In his gym battles, he's known to lead with a Lunatone.

Though, there are a few old photos of him with a Solrock...

Design notes

His hair is pink on top with a thin line of purple on the bottom.

He's more of a gremlin than his outfit suggests.

Overview

Kaeru's a condescending, arrogant type who's happy to ridicule heroes and allies alike. Stormy weather tends to follow him, which meshes with his battle strategy.

His name is derived from Boris's song Huge, which opens with loops of voices in opposite channels saying "Subete ni" and "Kaeru." And Kaeru-kun is their very cute stuffed froggy mascot.

Overview

To quote Mayrune, he's type to say "Hey, don't take this pers onally. It's just business." before siccing his Mega Mawile on you.

She came up with his design and a lot of his personality based on the vibes I wanted.

He's also a bit theatrical and says stuff like "Exit stage right" and "Au revoir!"

A metallic gremlin. Floofy-haired. Named after a fast car.

I wonder why his glasses are nonagon-shaped?

His design started with the hairstyle. Its two streaks are based on bronze and copper.

I wanted him to be as floofy-haired and soft as possible. It's a fun contrast to his scary side.

The jacket is a really important part of his look. He wants to look intimidating.

Smug punchable jerk. Fights using a lance. Surprisingly not named after any of three Alains in the French jazz-funk group Cortex.

Design notes

The collar on his outfit's bottom layer has the a "VII" on it.

It's not in this art, but he has a cursed gauntlet.

He wears heels to make himself very slightly taller than Alcor. And uses a lance to counter him. Guess I've been a sucker for countering rivals even before the Pokemon OCs were made.
